My name is Dafina. At 35, my life changed forever when I was diagnosed with stage 2 womb cancer that had already spread to my ovaries. To save my life, I had a total hysterectomy, removing my uterus and both ovaries. Overnight, I was thrown into surgical menopause and lost the ability to have children. I survived, but many women don’t. I’m sharing my story because far too many lives are lost due to late diagnosis of gynaecological cancers. Before my diagnosis, I had a routine cervical screening, and it came back normal. A few months later, I developed severe bloating and abnormal bleeding. My GP didn’t perform a pelvic exam, and my symptoms were dismissed. It wasn’t until I was abroad that a tumour was found. Each year in the UK, around 3,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer - the only gynaecological cancer currently screened for. In contrast, over 18,000 women are diagnosed with womb, ovarian, vulval, or vaginal cancers, none of which have routine screening available. Early detection could have saved me from so much trauma. We urgently need better access to regular gynaecological check-ups in the UK. Women’s lives depend on it.
