Veronique shares her journey with vulvar cancer
World Gynecologic Oncology Day would like to thank Esperanza, our Belgian patient organization, for recording and subtitling this video.
At age 42, Veronique from Belgium received a life-changing diagnosis of vulvar cancer, driven by a long-standing autoimmune condition called lichen sclerosus. Because she sought medical care promptly upon noticing an unusual sore, her cancer was caught in its early stages.
Following her diagnosis, Veronique underwent a complete vulvectomy. Beyond the intense physical recovery, the diagnosis brought profound emotional and relational challenges. Veronique speaks candidly about navigating body image, coming to terms with structural changes, and adjusting to a new form of intimacy with her supportive husband.
Now five years post-surgery, Veronique is actively working to dismantle the lingering taboos surrounding vulvar cancer and female intimate health. Through her advocacy with Esperanza—a Belgian support network for gynaecological cancer patients—she shares her story in national media and public campaigns to ensure no woman faces this rare disease in isolation. Her primary message to all women is clear: never hesitate or feel embarrassed to see a gynaecologist if you notice painful, unusual, or persistent changes in your body, as early detection truly saves lives.
