In 2026, we expanded the topic of stigma in gynecologic cancers further to highlight the need for support for cancer patients, their caregivers, and the need for more visibility of women´s health topics among policymakers and in the public space in general.

 

"Support not Stigma!" A call to move beyond awareness of the problem and actively build systems of support for women affected by gynaecological cancers. Women's health has historically been less prioritised. Even today, gynecologic health is not talked about enough. Female reproductive systems and female-presenting bodies are stigmatised and often seen as 'taboo'.

 

Much too often, many are taught to dismiss or even hide the signs and symptoms of gynecologic cancer for the comfort of others. This can result in later diagnoses which, unfortunately, are linked to worse survival and treatment outcomes. Patients and their caregivers often report feeling unsupported or alienated, even within previously supportive relationships.

 

This year, the World Gynecologic Oncology Day was under the patronage of the European Parliament, marking a huge step forward in recognition of the importance of the topic of women´s health in policymaking.

 

The campaign focus was:

- on addressing different forms of support that health care professionals, patient organisations, caregivers, and friends can offer to cancer patients

- on appealing to the policy makers to raise awareness about the issues of women´s health

- on different gyn cancer symptoms and prevention, the importance of early detection

- encouraging women to go for a check-up, understand gyn cancer symptoms, and to dare to ask their doctor about them
